A Thousand Splendid Suns- Khaled Hosseini

Book Review

A Thousand Splendid Suns, the story is about two women Mariam and Lila both at the mercy of Rasheed their husband. These women are just vessels for Rasheed for producing children, sexual release or unhinging his anger. The story starts out with Mariam, a young girl and a social pariah who faces many challenges.  At the age of fourteen she is betrayed by her father, her mother dies, and is forced into marrying an abusive husband. Married to Rasheed only for her ability to produce children, after seven miscarries she is at the mercy of her husband, in a county where women have no rights and are the property of their  husbands. When Mariam husband decides to take another wife in the hopes of producing a child  Mariam protest initially.  Eventually Mariam grows to love Laila and becomes a protector and mother for Laila.  She eventually becomes a grandmother to her children all the while trying to protect them from her husband violence.  Laila  grew up the opposite of Mariam,  well read, and educated. She fell in love with her childhood friend Tariq. Laila feeling all was lost when she believed her childhood sweetheart Laila agrees marry Rasheed years older than herself. This story captures your attention the entire time.  You will want to stay up all night to find out the outcome. The story had me wanting to speed read but afraid to do so, when Mariam and Laila where attempting to escape. Close to the end of the book Hosseini has the reader overwhelmed with every single emotion.  You see the escalating danger, will Rasheed kill Laila?  The suspense builds up to an apex. Finally  Mariam takes control, like a mother bear guarding her cub.  Mariam has had a chance to do a self assessment of her own identity, she realizes she can challenge the identities that have been imposed on her, and she has a choices, she can change the course of her loved ones lives, and her own. It’s a work of art how Hosseini ties everything together with one single act.
In all members of the animal kingdom, the most vicious animal you can face is that of a mother protecting her young. Women have been known to accomplish amazing feats and in the end Mariam will do anything to keep Lilia and her kids safe. This is a pivotal point in the novel. In one final act Mariam uses the combination of both her inner strength and physical strength to release the chains of bondage.

Let me start off by saying I’m a happily every after romance kind of women. I  read to escape and relax; this book wasn’t an easy read. It was difficult emotionally.  The violence and the cultural limitations these women had to endure was a challenge for me to get my head around. There where parts that really made me wonder at the depravity of man kind. Having said all that it’s defiantly one of the best books I have every read. Having seen these women in such disparity made the end so much sweeter. After one week of reading this book I met women my own age that lived in Afghanistan. She was 13 years old when she was forced to marry a  man 20 years older than her.  Her husband was Physical and emotionally abusive. This story may be fictionally, but as my friend spoke to me I realized that Khaled Hosseini wrote this novel as close to real life as you can get. In my opinion the  power to endure was the  key ingredient  In Khaled Hosseini`s novel. book Hosseini has the reader overwhelmed with every single emotion.  You see the escalating danger, will Rasheed kill Laila?  The suspense builds up to an apex.
